Professional teeth whitening, also known as teeth bleaching, has become extremely popular. The procedure lightens the shade of your teeth without removing surface material, with results potentially lasting up to 3 years depending on lifestyle factors.
In-surgery whitening: the dentist applies a stronger bleaching agent, typically completing treatment in just over an hour, involving gum protection, bleach application, light heating and a water rinse.
At-home trays: custom-fitted trays filled with gel are worn for several hours daily or overnight. Results emerge within 3 days to two weeks, though the process takes longer than in-office treatment.
Over-the-counter kits use generic trays and weaker bleach concentrations. We discourage their use due to potential gum irritation and reduced effectiveness. Whitening toothpastes contain mild abrasives for surface stain removal but do not actually bleach teeth, though they may help extend results.
Tooth-coloured fillings and replacement teeth will not lighten with these treatments. Temporary sensitivity to hot and cold may occur post-treatment. Prior dental work and a professional clean are often necessary before whitening can proceed.
