Restoring tooth structure lost to decay, wear or damage.
If a cavity is detected during a check-up, your dentist can provide a dental filling before it develops into a more serious problem. Fillings restore tooth structure that has been lost to decay, wear or damage.
The dentist numbs the area, removes decay and any weak tooth material, shapes the cavity, then cleans it before placing and moulding the filling into position.
Two options are available: silver (amalgam) and white fillings. White fillings are more aesthetic as they can be matched in colour to your natural teeth, although suitability varies by situation and requires a dentist's assessment.
Dental amalgam has been used and studied for well over a century and is considered safe for most adults. Mercury becomes stable when combined with other metals in the filling. UK regulations prohibit amalgam use for children under 15 and for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
For larger tooth damage, inlays and onlays offer a stronger and longer-lasting restoration. An inlay sits in a hole in the tooth, while an onlay sits on the tooth and builds up its shape. Materials include porcelain, gold or composite.
All treatments are subject to a clinical assessment and may not be suitable for everyone. Please speak to the dentist to discuss what is right for you.
