Gum Disease

Understanding, treating and preventing the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is inflammation and infection of the tissues supporting the teeth. There are two main types: gingivitis, which affects the gums alone and is typically reversible, and periodontitis, which is more serious and affects the bone supporting the teeth.

Causes

The primary cause is plaque build-up. If plaque is not removed thoroughly by brushing and cleaning between the teeth, it irritates the gums and can harden into tartar, which can only be removed professionally.

Most of the adult population suffers from some form of gum disease, and it is the major cause of tooth loss in adults. However, with proper monitoring and treatment, most people can retain their teeth throughout life. Beyond poor cleaning habits, other risk factors include smoking, family history, diabetes and certain medications.

Treatment

Following effective home cleaning, professional root cleaning may be necessary, sometimes under local anaesthetic. Antibiotics are also sometimes prescribed.

If you have already lost bone around the teeth, this bone will not be able to grow back fully, so maintaining rigorous daily plaque removal is essential to prevent further deterioration.

All treatments are subject to a clinical assessment and may not be suitable for everyone. Please speak to the dentist to discuss what is right for you.
